Dr. Rick Newhart Updates
Dr Newhart Obtains Nd:Yag Laser Training And Proficiency
Dr. Newhart
and other dentists from
around the country attended an in-depth 3-day training at the
Institute
of
Advanced Laser Dentistry
.
Upon completion of the program
Dr. Newhart
was able to become
certified in the patented Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP)
and use the new FDA-approved technique for treatment of moderate to
advanced periodontitis.
Dr. Newhart
is very excited to bring
this new technology to
West Virginia
. Clinicians will be
receiving a separate mailing regarding changes in treatment protocol.
This periodontal update contains two additional articles in
reference to the LANAP procedure.
LANAP IN PRIVATE PRACTICE
Harris
et al. (General Dentistry Sept/October2004;V55, N5) conducted a
retrospective analysis of 42 patients receiving LANAP at three
private dental practices and compared these results with a clinical
trial at the University of Texas Health Science Center in
San Antonio
. The purpose of the study was to determine if the University
Nd:YAG laser results could be replicated in private practice. The 6-months
comparison pocket measurements showed that all three private practice
locations showed a greater mean improvement in clinical parameters than
the
University
of
Texas
study. The investigators
found no measurable recession of the gingival margins with the laser
treated pockets. A significant finding was that at 6-months, measurements
showed a probing depth reduction of approximately 1.5mm for pockets in the
4-6mm range and for pockets in the 7mm and greater range, pockets depth
reductions of 3.5mm were found. The
results also found that more than 90% of all the pockets of the
initial depth of 4mm or greater showed a significant decrease in pocketing
at 6 months. It should be
noted that the
University
of
Texas
team used a single pass
with the laser, while the clinicians in private practice used the modern
patented procedure, which
Dr. Newhart
will use.
CALCIUM OR LACTIC ACID?
Shimazaki
et al. (JPerio2008; 79:131-137) studied the relationship between different
dairy products and periodontal disease. Their cross-sectional study
performed a periodontal examination and evaluated 942 subjects on their
dietary food intact separated into 4 food groups of milk, cheese, lactic
acid foods (such as yogurt products), and other dairy products such as
skim milk. The results showed that dairy products such as milk, skim milk,
and cheese could not be associated with pockets depths, only the lactic
acid foods were found to have a correlation. The authors postulate
that calcium intake may not have a significant effect on the periodontal
status of healthy subjects. However,
lactic acid foods with live lactobacillus may inhibit periodontal disease
by a competitive effect of the lactic acid bacteria. In other words,
yogurt is better for your gums than milk.
EIGHT-YEAR LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY RESULTS
Drs.
Gregg and McCarthy (Dentistry Today, February 2003;V22, N2) present the
results of an 8-year retrospective study of 22 patients randomly
selected from the over 800 patients treated with laser periodontal therapy
from their private practices. Before treatment and after treatment
radiographs were analyzed with digital subtraction radiography and
evaluated by an independent examiner for bony changes. Evaluation of the
digital radiography after 8 years shows that in every
single patient
bone regeneration was evident after laser therapy.
After
an 8-year time period, the examiners found over 40% pocket depth
reduction, with no observable increase in gingival recession.
Standard periodontal surgery many times will result in gingival recession
in the attempt to reduce pocket depth.
Dr. Newhart
is very encouraged by
this new type of procedure and hopes to use it to help our patients in the
Mid-Ohio
Valley
.
